Now self-serve. This article describes the new, current client-managed navigation UI. Previously this required a support ticket, but now is completely available to manage in the client dashboard.
This guide will help you add new links to your school website's navigation menu, making it easy for visitors to find important pages and information.
Navigation menus are a vital part of your website, helping users quickly find content and improving overall usability.
Getting Started
To add a new navigation link, locate the drop-down menu where you want to add the link and click New Item.
Types of Links You Can Add
Your website supports four different types of navigation links:
Section/Page Links
Use this option to link to pages you've created within your website, such as your school's About page, Admissions information, or PTA section.
Important: The page you are trying to link must be created first or already exist in your pages feature.
Steps:
Click Select a page
Browse or search for the page you want to link to
Select your desired page
Edit the link name if needed (the page title appears automatically)
Click Done
URL Links
Use this option to link to external websites or custom pages within your site.
Steps:
Click the URL tab
Enter a name for your link
Enter the website address
Choose whether to open the link in a new tab or same window
Click Done
File Links
Use this option to link directly to documents, PDFs, or other files that visitors can download.
Steps:
Click the File tab
Enter a name for your link
Upload your file by dragging and dropping or clicking Upload
Click Done
Note: If you delete this navigation item later, the file will be permanently deleted as well.
Feature Page Links
Use this option to link to automatically generated pages like news sections, calendars, class listings, or staff directories.
Steps:
Click the Feature Page tab
Click Select a feature
Browse or search for the feature you want
Select your desired feature
Edit the link name if needed
Click Done
Adding Additional Content
Some website designs support extra media in navigation menus (called "Mega Menus"). You can add images or other files to display alongside your menu items if your design supports this feature.
Publishing Your Changes
After creating any navigation link, remember to click Save at the top of the page to publish your changes to the live website.
Managing Top-Level Navigation Items
Adding Top-Level Items
We recommend keeping your main navigation to a maximum of 8 top-level items for the best user experience, as exceeding this limit may cause layout issues or reduce usability.
Scroll to the bottom of the navigation settings
Click New Top Level Item
Enter a name for your navigation section
Choose the item type
Save your changes
Navigation items may appear on multiple lines if the navigation bar reaches its maximum width due to the number of words or containers. Reducing the length of navigation labels or total number of items helps maintain a single-line layout.
Removing Top-Level Items
Warning: Deleting a top-level item will remove all associated sub-items permanently and cannot be undone.
Click the three dots next to the item you want to delete
Select Delete
Confirm your choice
Best Practices
Keep your navigation simple and organized
Use clear, descriptive names for your links
Test your navigation after making changes
Limit top-level items to 5-8 for optimal usability — be mindful of navigation layout constraints to prevent items from wrapping to the second line by using concise labels and limiting word count in navigation items.
Review your website regularly to ensure all links work properly
Need help from Edlio Support?
Your site navigation is fully client-managed, but if you run into layout problems, want to add Mega Menu media that your design doesn't currently support, or need advice on navigation structure, you can submit a ticket to Edlio Support via Eddy, our AI support assistant.
Step 1: Open Eddy in your admin dashboard
Log into your Edlio admin site and click the Eddy chat icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Step 2: Describe what you need
Click Ask a Question and type a request like:
"We're having trouble with our navigation bar wrapping to two lines — can you advise?"
Eddy may suggest knowledge-base articles first. If you want to skip straight to a ticket, continue the conversation — Eddy will connect you with the support team.
Step 3: Include this information in the ticket
Your school or district name
Your website URL
A description of what you're trying to do and what's happening instead
For non-technical questions: Contract, renewal, billing, sales, or account questions go to [email protected] — the Client Success team handles those.
