Looking at your homepage and wondering what you can change yourself versus what requires a support ticket? This guide is a region-by-region map.
Your homepage is made up of several regions. Some are self-serve — you can edit them from your CMS admin. Some are theme-baked — they're part of your site's design and only Edlio Support can change them. The diagram below shows the most common layout; your site may look different, but the regions are usually the same.
Schematic of a typical Edlio homepage. Your site may look different — these are the most common regions.

A. Header — logo and top bar
The header is the top strip of your homepage. It contains two things, edited in different ways:
School logo (left side): This is a theme asset baked into your site design. The same logo file is used in your footer — there is only one logo image, used in two places. You cannot edit it from the admin.
Want to change it? Open an Eddy ticket with your new logo file attached. See Update your site logo and header image.Header Links (the small links/icons above the main menu — sometimes labeled "Header Links", "Social Media Links" or "Quicklinks"): These are usually self-serve from your admin. See Links overview. If they are not found in your dashboard under Page Management → Links, open a ticket and our team will help you.
Example: "I want to update our 'Quicklinks' bar to add a Lunch Menu link." → Self-serve in the Links area. "I want to replace the school logo with our new mascot design." → Eddy ticket.
B. Site Navigation
The main horizontal menu (About Us, Academics, Athletics, Parents, etc.) is fully self-serve. You can add, rename, reorder, hide, or remove items, and create drop-down sub-menus.
C. Hero section (Shuffle & Featured Video)
The large rotating image area at the top of your homepage is called the Hero section. It can show either a Shuffle (rotating images with optional captions) or a Featured Video. Both are self-serve.
View and manage a shuffle (add slides, captions, change order, set transitions)
Make a video featured (set a video as your homepage Featured Video)
Example: "I need to add this week's spirit-week photos to our hero slideshow." → Self-serve — open your Shuffle and add slides. "Our hero video is showing the old principal — replace it with our new welcome video." → Self-serve — upload the new video and mark it featured.
D. Spotlight Messages (Mission, About, content sections)
The text sections on your homepage with headings like "Our Mission", "About Us", "Welcome from the Principal" are Spotlight Messages — a self-serve content tool. Each Spotlight Message has a title, a body, an optional image or video, and an optional "Read more" link to a longer page.
Note: "Page blocks" (Content blocks, Photo blocks, Link Blocks, Button blocks, etc.) are a Pages feature, not a Homepage feature. They appear inside the pages of your site (About, Departments, Staff, etc.), not directly on the homepage. If you're editing the homepage and looking for those, you're probably looking at a Spotlight Message instead.
Example: "I want to update the Mission statement on our homepage." → Self-serve — edit the Mission Spotlight Message. "I want to add a Welcome video and intro text below the hero." → Self-serve — create a new Spotlight Message with the video.
E. News block
The "Recent News" cards on your homepage are populated by your News & Alerts entries. Self-serve — write a news story and it appears here automatically (based on the categories your homepage News block subscribes to).
F. Events block
The "Upcoming Events" list pulls from your Calendars. Self-serve — add events to your calendar and they appear here.
G. Social media — depends on where it is
Social media appears on Edlio homepages in three different ways, and most are self-serve:
Social icon row (just clickable F/X/IG icons, no feed) — usually theme-baked in your header or footer. To change which URLs the icons link to, see Manage social media icons, widgets, and feeds. Some changes are self-serve, some require a ticket — that article tells you which.
Facebook / Twitter / Instagram feeds (showing actual posts from your accounts) — this is usually theme-baked. The placement, layout, and which accounts are pulled are set in your theme. → Eddy ticket to change accounts or layout.
Note: Site Management → Settings → Social Media — this is a different feature for pushing News stories out to your social accounts (auto-post), not for editing the homepage display. See Push News to social media.
Example: "Our Instagram feed on the homepage is not showing our current feed → Eddy ticket (theme-level). "I want to change which Facebook page our 'F' icon links to." → Self-serve via Links area. You always can confirm via Eddy ticket if you don't see a Links entry for it.
H. Homepage Video (beyond the Hero)
If your homepage has a video below the Hero — for example a "Welcome" video embedded in a Spotlight Message, or a standalone Featured Video farther down the page — that video is self-serve.
If it's embedded inside a Spotlight Message: edit the Spotlight Message (see region D).
If it's a separate Featured Video: see Make a video featured.
Example: "There's a welcome video on our homepage that needs to be replaced." → Self-serve. Find the Spotlight Message that hosts the video, or update the Featured Video, depending on where it lives.
I. Homepage Widgets (Button & Form — client-led add-on)
Homepage Widgets are a client-led add-on, not a built-in homepage feature. If your school chose to set one up, you'll see a small floating element overlaid on your homepage. There are exactly two types:
Button widget — a single floating call-to-action button (e.g., "Sign Up for Open House!")
Form widget — a slide-up signup form (e.g., "Join Our Newsletter")
Homepage Widgets overview covers both.
Both widgets are self-serve when in use. If your school doesn't have one set up, you won't see this on your homepage.
J. Footer (logo, address, links, social bar)
The footer mixes self-serve and theme-baked elements:
Footer logo — same image asset as your header logo. Theme — Eddy ticket.
Footer address — self-serve. Edit at Settings → Contact → Address. This same address is also used elsewhere on your site (e.g., the Contact page).
Footer phone / fax — self-serve. Edit at Settings → Contact. See Settings FAQs for the multiple-phone-numbers caveat.
"Useful Links" / "Helpful Resources" link rows — these are Links (managed in the admin Links area). Self-serve. See Links overview.
Footer social icon bar — same as the header social icons: usually theme-baked layout, but the URLs the icons point to may be editable via Links. See Manage social media icons, widgets, and feeds.
Full footer redesign — Eddy ticket. See Edit your site footer.
K. The "Powered by Edlio" bar
The very bottom strip — "Powered by Edlio", the language selector, the Edlio login link — is managed by Edlio. It is not editable, and it is a standard part of every Edlio site.
Fonts, colors, and layout structure
Anywhere on your site — homepage or otherwise — these are theme-locked and require an Eddy ticket:
Font family / font weight / heading sizes
Brand colors (buttons, backgrounds, accent colors)
Section background colors, spacing between sections, container widths
Adding or removing features from a page (e.g., adding a News block where one doesn't exist, removing the Events block from your homepage)
Changing the order of features on a page (e.g., moving the News row above the Events row when both are theme-placed regions)
See Fonts and colors for what you can and can't change yourself.
Tricky cases: when you're not sure
Some elements look similar but live in different places. If you're in doubt, the examples below will help — and if it's still unclear, open an Eddy ticket and Support will tell you which surface owns it.
Common tricky cases
"There's a scrolling row of icons on my homepage — is that a widget or theme?"
Most likely: If it's a horizontal scroller that moves on its own or on hover, it's almost always theme-baked. If it's a static row of buttons/icons sitting in your page content, it's a Link Block with Button layout (self-serve, a Pages feature, not Homepage)."There are quick-link tiles below my hero — Link Block or theme?"
Most likely: If you can see them inside the Page editor when you edit the homepage, they're a Link Block (self-serve). If you don't see them in the Page editor, they're theme-baked — Eddy ticket."The 'Daily Announcements' bar at the top — can I edit that?"
Most likely: Theme-baked custom feature for your district. Eddy ticket."The icons in my header that aren't a search bar — what are those?"
Most likely: Top Bar Links (self-serve via Links area) OR theme-baked social icon row. If you don't see them in your Links admin area, they're theme-baked — open an Eddy ticket."I want to change the order of sections on my homepage."
Most likely: If you mean rearranging page blocks within the page body, that's self-serve (drag-and-drop in the Page editor). If you mean moving the News block above the Mission block when those are in different theme regions, that's theme-level — Eddy ticket."The icon strip in my footer with school awards / accolades."
Most likely: Theme-baked. Eddy ticket.
When you open an Eddy ticket for any of these, include:
A link to your homepage (so Support can see the exact element)
A description of which element you mean (or a screenshot with the element highlighted)
What you want changed
Still not sure?
If you've checked the regions above and still can't tell whether something is self-serve or theme-baked, the fastest path is:
Look for the element in your CMS admin first. Look in your CMS admin: Spotlight Messages (for content sections), News & Alerts, the Links area, and the Homepage Widgets area (if your school uses them). If you don't see the element in any of those, it's likely theme-baked.
If still unclear, open an Eddy ticket. See Getting help: complete guide to Edlio Support for how to submit a ticket. Include a link to your homepage and tell us what element you're trying to change.
