slide layout caption link

After you've typed the caption you can select all or part of it to format

In the example below the entire caption is set to centered and H2 (header size 2). And now the word American is highlighted and set to italic.

These styles apply to the entire caption: H1, H2, H3, left align, center align, right align.

These options only apply to the text you have selected: bold, italic, and link.

Caption accessibility tip: Captions are read by screen readers along with the alt text. Keep captions short and meaningful — long captions on a rotating shuffle slide can be hard to follow. Avoid burying critical info in the caption alone; if the message matters, also include it in the alt tag.

Important, using the link caption button only adds the link to the specific words you selected in the caption. If you want the entire slide to be linked you must use the Link button that appears by the Crop button.

Alternate Text (alt tag)

Alt text describes the image to anyone who can't see it — screen-reader users, visitors with images turned off, or when an image fails to load. For shuffle slides on your homepage, good alt text is especially important: the slide is one of the first things a visitor encounters, and a missing or vague alt tag is a common accessibility audit finding.

🤖 Edlio AI can generate alt text for you. If your district has Edlio AI enabled, the Alt button opens a panel where you can auto-generate descriptive alt text from the image, then edit it before saving. To enable Edlio AI for your site, contact [email protected].

🎓 Need live help with alt text? Edlio's free Accessibility Study Halls are live working sessions where you can get hands-on help writing alt text, fixing accessibility issues, and reviewing your site with an Edlio team member. Sign up from your CMS dashboard — click the red Edlio "e" widget in the bottom-right corner, open the Help tab, and you'll find Study Hall sign-ups there. See Common alt-text issues for written guidance you can review before the session.

What makes good alt text:

  • Describe the image, don't label it. "Students at lunch in the cafeteria" — not "image1.jpg" or "lunch".

  • Skip redundant phrases. Don't start with "image of" or "picture of" — screen readers already announce it as an image.

  • Keep it concise. Aim for one sentence. If the image contains text, include that text in the alt.

  • Decorative-only slides still need alt text — if the slide is purely decorative (e.g., a background pattern), use a short description rather than leaving it blank. Leaving alt blank on a homepage slide will flag in accessibility scans.
