Understanding user types

Updated over a week ago

Overview

User types in Edlio CMS help you organize and populate your staff directory based on roles within your organization. This article explains how user types work and how they help structure your school's staff directory.

Please note: If a user type is not assigned, the user will not appear in the staff directory

About User Types

User types serve as organizational labels that help categorize staff members in your school's directory. They do not grant or restrict system privileges - their primary function is to help populate and organize the staff directory by role.

Any account holder can be assigned a user type to ensure they appear in the appropriate section of your staff directory and are properly categorized by their role within the school.

Available User Types

Edlio now offers three user types specifically designed for school staff organization:

School Administrators

For principals, assistant principals, superintendents, and other administrative leadership roles within the school or district.

Teachers

For classroom teachers, instructors, and educational staff who work directly with students in teaching capacities.

Other Employees

For all other school staff members, including support staff, custodial staff, office personnel, counselors, librarians, and any other employees who don't fall into the administrator or teacher categories.

How User Types Work

User types function purely as organizational tools:

  • They help populate your staff directory with properly categorized personnel

  • They organize staff members by role for easy browsing by parents, students, and community members

  • They do not affect what users can or cannot do within the system

  • System privileges and permissions are managed with site-wide access levels, which are separate from user type assignments

  • If a user type is not assigned, the user will not appear in the staff directory

Best Practices

  • Assign user types that accurately reflect each staff member's primary role

  • Ensure all staff members who should appear in the directory have an appropriate user type assigned

  • Update user types when staff members change roles within the organization

  • Use consistent categorization to maintain an organized and professional staff directory
