Frequently Asked Questions regarding DNS

General

πŸ“§ DNS-specific questions? Email Edlio's DNS team directly at [email protected] for help with nameservers, DNS records, email authentication (SPF/DKIM/DMARC/MX), domain transfers, or SSL setup. For general support, you can also open a ticket through Eddy in your admin dashboard.

How can I verify if Edlio manages the DNS records for my domain?

  1. Go to a WHOIS lookup website. Some popular options:

    1. GoDaddy WHOIS Lookup: https://www.godaddy.com/whois

    2. Name.com WHOIS Lookup: https://www.name.com/whois-lookup

  2. Enter your domain name (e.g., yourdomain.com) and click Lookup.

  3. Look for the Name Servers field. If you see `ns1.edlio.com` and `ns2.edlio.com`, Edlio manages your DNS β€” we make changes on your behalf via a support ticket. If you see anything else, you (or your IT team) manage your DNS and make changes in your own DNS provider's control panel.

I need to update DNS β€” where do I start?

Most DNS questions fall into one of these scenarios. Pick the one that matches what you're trying to do:

  • Set up email authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC, MX β€” for school email, Mailchimp, finalsite, M365) β†’ see Email authentication records.

  • Verify domain ownership with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or another service that needs a TXT record β†’ see "How do I add a TXT record for domain verification?" below.

  • Add a subdomain (e.g. `apps.yourschool.org`) β†’ see "Can I add a new subdomain to my Edlio site?" below.

  • Find your current DNS records β†’ see "How do I find my current DNS records?" below.

  • Redirect an additional domain to your Edlio site β†’ see "Can I redirect other domains to my Edlio site?" below.

  • Move away from Edlio and need your records / domain back β†’ see Moving away from Edlio: DNS records and domain transfer.

How do I find my current DNS records?

DNS records are stored at the DNS provider that's authoritative for your domain (look up nameservers via WHOIS to find that provider, then sign in there).

  • If your nameservers are `ns1.edlio.com` / `ns2.edlio.com`, Edlio is authoritative. There's no admin screen in the CMS to view DNS records β€” submit a ticket via Eddy and Support will send your current records.

  • If your nameservers are anything else (your registrar, your IT team's DNS, Cloudflare, etc.), sign into that provider's control panel and view the records there.

  • You can also use a public tool like ICANN Lookup or `dig`/`nslookup` to read the publicly-visible records without signing in anywhere. This won't show every record (some are internal), but it's a fast way to confirm what the world sees.

Does Edlio own my domain?

No. Your school or district owns your domain β€” it's registered to you with your registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.). Edlio may manage the DNS records for your domain (when your nameservers point to `ns1.edlio.com` / `ns2.edlio.com`), but ownership and registration stay with you.

If you're not sure who registered your domain, a WHOIS lookup shows the registrar (and sometimes the registrant, depending on privacy settings).

Records and changes

How do I add a TXT record for domain verification (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, etc.)?

Domain-ownership verification (used by Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoom, and many other services) usually asks you to add a single TXT record at your domain root with a string the service provides.

  • If Edlio manages your DNS (`ns1.edlio.com` / `ns2.edlio.com`): submit a ticket through Eddy with the TXT value the service gave you. Include which service it's for so Support has context. Edlio adds the record, then you click "Verify" in the service's console.

  • If you manage your DNS: sign into your DNS provider's control panel and add the TXT record yourself. Most providers ask for Hostname (often `@` for the root), Type (TXT), and Value (the string the service gave you).

Allow up to a few hours for propagation before clicking "Verify" β€” though most checks pass within minutes.

How can I add a DNS record to my domain if Edlio manages it?

If your domain uses `ns1.edlio.com` and `ns2.edlio.com` nameservers, submit a ticket via Eddy outlining the DNS modifications you need. Include:

  • Your school or district name and website URL.

  • The records to add or change, exactly as you want them β€” Type, Hostname, Value, and Priority (for MX).

  • The reason or vendor, so Support has context (e.g. "for Mailchimp authentication," "for Microsoft 365 verification").

Edlio Support adds the records and confirms when complete. See Email authentication records for the full Eddy ticket flow.

How long do DNS changes take to take effect?

DNS changes usually start propagating within a few minutes and reach most of the internet within a few hours. Full global propagation can take up to 48 hours. Three things affect the timing:

  • Time-to-Live (TTL) settings β€” determines how often resolvers refresh cached records. Shorter TTLs propagate faster.

  • Domain registrar efficiency β€” some registrars push changes out faster than others.

  • Internet Service Providers (ISPs) β€” some ISPs cache aggressively and lag the rest of the internet by hours.

If a change hasn't taken effect after 48 hours, something is off β€” contact Edlio Support (Edlio-managed DNS) or check your DNS provider's control panel (own DNS).

Subdomains

Can I add a new subdomain to my Edlio site?

Yes. A subdomain is created by adding a CNAME record that points to Edlio's hosting infrastructure.

  • If Edlio manages your DNS: submit a ticket via Eddy with the subdomain name you want (e.g. `apps.yourschool.org`) and confirm whether it should point to your main Edlio site.

  • If you manage your DNS: add a CNAME record with Hostname set to the new subdomain (e.g. `apps`) and Value set to [School/District ID].sites.edliocloud.com. See "What is my School/District ID?" below.

What is my School/District ID?

To connect your domain to Edlio's hosting infrastructure, you'll need CNAME records using this format:

[School/District ID].sites.edliocloud.com

Your School/District ID is typically your domain name without extensions or prefixes. For example, if your website is `www.website.com`, your ID would be `website`, making your CNAME value: website.sites.edliocloud.com.

If you're unsure of your School/District ID, submit a ticket through Eddy β€” Support can confirm.

What is `edlioschool.com` or `edliocloud.com`? I see one of these in a URL.

These are Edlio's internal hosting domains β€” the actual servers that serve your Edlio site. Your public domain (e.g. `www.yourschool.org`) points to one of these through a CNAME record, which is why you may occasionally see them in browser URLs, DNS lookups, or error messages.

You don't need to do anything with these domains β€” they exist for Edlio's hosting infrastructure. If a visitor reaches your site via an `edlioschool.com` or `edliocloud.com` URL instead of your school's public domain, contact Edlio Support so we can investigate the routing.

Edlio-managed DNS

Can I redirect other domains to my Edlio site?

Yes. To redirect an additional domain to your Edlio website, the additional domain's DNS needs to point to the Edlio DNS configuration. Submit a ticket via Eddy to begin β€” Support will outline the records you need to set on the additional domain.

Can Edlio issue an SSL Certificate for a non-Edlio domain?

SSL certificates require the domain to point to the Edlio DNS configuration. If your domain isn't using Edlio nameservers yet but you'd like an SSL certificate issued for an Edlio-hosted site, submit a ticket via Eddy.

I recently launched my domain, but I am seeing a 1001 CloudFlare error β€” is this normal?

Yes β€” the 1001 CloudFlare error is expected briefly while Edlio's systems securely verify your domain to issue the SSL certificate. If the error persists for more than an hour, submit a ticket via Eddy and Support will double-check your DNS configuration.
