How to Add Google Analytics to Your Website

Google Analytics is a powerful tool that allows you to track and analyze the traffic on your website. By adding Google Analytics to your site, you can gain valuable insights into your audience, their behavior, and how they interact with your content. In this article, we will guide you through the process of creating a Google Analytics account and a new GA4 property, so you can start using this powerful tool on your website.Additionally, we will touch upon integrating Google Tag Manager (GTM) for users interested in advanced tracking and tag management solutions.

Step 1: Create a Google Analytics Account

Before you can add Google Analytics to your site, you'll need to have a Google Analytics account. If you already have a Google account, you can use that to sign in to Google Analytics.

Step 2: Create a New GA4 Property

Once you have a Google Analytics account, you can create a new GA4 property. A property is a website, app, or device that you want to track with Google Analytics.

For detailed instructions on creating a Google Analytics account and a new GA4 property, you can refer to this analytics help article.

Step 3: Add Google Analytics to Your Website

Now that you have a Google Analytics account and a new GA4 property, you can add the tracking code to your website. This code allows Google Analytics to collect data about your website visitors. While the Google Analytics tracking code can be added directly through the Edlio admin panel, integrating Google Tag Manager (GTM) requires assistance from Edlio Support.

Integrating Google Tag Manager (GTM)

Ownership and Management of GTM

Both Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager codes are controlled by the school or organization, not by Edlio. These codes are generated via Google’s platforms and must be sent to Edlio Support to be embedded in your site’s code. Note that GTM is not managed through the Edlio admin panel.

Tag Placement

The Google Tag Manager code is typically added to the site header to ensure it triggers across all pages. Pages using redirect-only URLs or temporary implementation domains will not trigger tags, so refrain from configuring tags on those.

Best Practices

  • Configure tracking settings only on publicly accessible domain names, avoiding temporary domain setups.

  • Use actual headers instead of redirect URLs to ensure proper tag firing. For guidance on integrating Google Tag Manager (GTM), which allows the addition of custom tags for tracking, consult Edlio Support.
